The Whangarei Art Museum offers their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Colleen Waata Urlich, who passed away on Thursday 10th September 2015.
Colleen Urlich was a pioneering ceramic artist and member of Nga Kaihanga Uku and key supporter of Toi Maori Aotearoa, working to develop Maori contemporary art practice for both emerging and established artists.
The Whangarei Art Museum has been fortunate to have in its collection two of Colleen Urlich’s ceramic works, one of the works Hinaki – Eel trap, Kapowai series – Dragonfly Lake (2007) has been on tour as part of the Uku Rere: Nga Kaihanga Uku & Beyond exhibition developed by Pataka Art + Museum in collaboration with Toi Maori Aotearoa and Creative New Zealand.
Her fellow artist and friend Manos Nathan, who sadly passed away on 2 September 2015, was also represented in Uku Rere and worked alongside her as members of Toi Maori Aotearoa. The Whangarei Art Museum had the honour of having both Colleen Urlich and Manos Nathan here in February 2014 as part of an artist talk for Uku Rere.
Colleen Urlich’s funeral service will take place on Monday 14 September.
